Divest from big tech

Below is my plan and progress on divesting from big tech, owning my own media, and archiving my digital and physical life.

Gmail --> Proton Mail

• Switch from Gmail to Proton Mail
  • Done, for professional email. Still have a big trash gmail that I use for signing up for things.
    • Make proton mail for throwaway things
  • Encountered deliverability issues with proton, emails not going through. This seems to be fixed now that I'm using a custom domain.

Google Drive --> Proton Drive and PC

• Move from Google Drive to Proton Drive
  • In-progress. I use Proton Drive for all new stuff. Need to migrate rest of stuff.
  • Google Drive backed up to hard drive. Writing backed up to Proton Drive.

Spotify --> Digital Audio Player and PC

• Cancel Spotify and go back to using mp3 player (in progress)
  • Get personal copies of songs in my library (in-progress)
  • Fixing iPod Classic unsuccessful, hard drive was failing. Ordered innioasis y1 mp3 player as a replacement.
  • Add Rockbox to Innioasis Mp3 Player - still trying to figure this out, pending an update from the Innioasis Updater app

Instagram -- > Archived to Static Webpage

I am not deleting Instagram (yet) as it is somewhat essential to my art business.

• Invest time to post on platforms you believe in, i.e. tumblr, are.na, neocities
  • Figure out mastodon
• Instagram backup
• Use Memento Mori to archive Instagram to static webpage (just to be safe)

Google Photos -- > Self-Hosted

• Get off Google Photos and switch to self-hosting on Immich
  • In progress. I've done Google Takeout a few times, but I need to figure out how to reattach the metadata to the photos.
    • Having promising results with GoogleTakeoutFixer!
